Chapter Thirteen

We didn’t have time to agree on how we were going to talk to Izzy about all of this. About a minute after my declaration, there was a knock at the door and Selene bolted to answer it.

My emotions were a confusing soup, making me simultaneously want to growl at Zach to get the fuck away from my mate and throw open the doors to declare our mating to everyone so that Selene couldn’t just pretend it was a temporary thing.

When I walked into the main sitting area of the suite, Steph had her arms around Selene, her simple cream colored wedding gown spilling silk behind her as Zach looked on, a hand on his new wife’s back. We eyed one another as I came into the room. While Steph didn’t have his bite, he was still clearly territorial about her at the moment. But then again, I was also itching to drag Selene away from him.

Zach’s jaw clenched and he nodded at me. I did the same and finally made my way over to my mate.

“I’m just so relieved that you’re alright!” Steph said, wiping her eyes. “I thought something really bad had happened but you just ended up mated? How?”

Selene shot me a nervous look, her smile tight.

“Well it’s…um, it’s a long story but all you need to know is that I’m fine now,” Selene reassured her.

“Where’s Izzy?” I asked.

“Morgana’s bringing her now,” Zach replied. “But Steph wanted to see you first.”

“You need to get back down to your wedding reception,” Selene said.

“Are you sure?” Steph asked. “You know, just because you didn’t get to walk in the wedding, that’s no reason for you to stay away.”

“She’s still not feeling well,” I said, my hand going to the back of Selene’s neck.

I thought she’d shrug me off, but instead she leaned back into my touch. It sent a thrill through me and I tightened my hold just a little, as I heard a tiny sigh escape her.

“Well, then,” Zach said, clearly understanding that I wanted privacy when Izzy got here, “let’s get downstairs. That brunch isn’t going to eat itself.”

“Alright, well, take care of her,” Steph said to me, and then to Selene, “Call us if you need anything, I mean it.”

“No.” Zach mouthed behind her, and I hid a smirk.

Just as they were leaving, Izzy burst through the door and ran to her mother.

“Mum! I thought something bad had happened!” she said, a tremble in her voice.

Selene gathered her daughter against her, face relaxed as if something had shaken loose inside. I glanced up to see Morgana and Jack standing in the doorway. Jack had his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal muscled forearms covered in a thick sleeve of tattoos, more crawled up his throat as he gave me a hard stare. Clearly he saw Selene and Izzy as part of his family and wanted to make sure I was going to treat them right. I hated that another male had to take
